Lynmouth provides an escape from modern living, with its rows of charming fishing cottages and shops, cafes and restaurants that cluster around the pretty harbour. For a breath of sea air, Lynmouth beach is just below the village, and the two villages Lymouth and Lynton are connected by the Cliff Railway. This famous Lynton and Lynmouth funicular Cliff Railway opened in 1890 and is the highest and the steepest totally water powered railway in the world – why not take a ride!
Awaken the senses
Valley of Rocks is another breath-taking local attraction: a fascinating valley that runs parallel to the coast, about half a mile west of Lynton. The herd of goats that live there are quite the celebrities, as they roam freely and often quite hair-raisingly on the jagged cliff edges!
The coastal cliffs are perfect for climbing or walking enthusiasts. For those seeking a more laid back walk, you can follow ‘North Walk’, which forms a coastal path leading to the valley and offering fantastic views of Lynmouth Bay and the sea. Valley of Rocks is the perfect place to throw down a rug to enjoy a picnic, glass of bubbly or a flask of your favourite tea. Sitting peacefully watching the sunset or sunrise here can be quite magnificent and awe-inspiring.
